Jorma Puranen was born in 1951. He is one of Finland’s best known photographers. He graduated Master of Arts from

University of Art and Design in Helsinki in 1978. He is known for his photographs of the Nordic landscapes with a conceptual approach. He worked as a professor at University of Art and Design as well as had many solo and group exhibitions. He has won the following awards:

• National Prize for Finnish Photography, 1988
• Fotofinlandia Award, 1992
• Pro Finlandia Award, 2005
• National Prize for Finnish Photography, 2010
• Higashikawa Award, in category Overseas Photographer Award, 2014

In his work, he explores the themes of history, culture, identity and memory, creating a dialogue between the past and the present. His subject matter has ranged from the illustrations of scholarly works and ethnographic photographs to historical portraiture, the points of departure of which are often found in archives or museums.

Jorma Puranen syntyi vuonna 1951. Hän on yksi Suomen tunnetuimmista valokuvaajista. Hän valmistui taiteen maisteriksi Taideteollisesta korkeakoulusta vuonna 1978. Hän on toiminut myös Taideteollisen korkeakoulun valokuvauksen professorina. Hän kuvaa pohjoismaisia maisemia käsitteellisistä lähtökohdista. Purasella on ollut useita yksityis- ja ryhmänäyttelyitä. Hän on voittanut seuraavat palkinnot:

• Pro Finlandia -palkinto, 2005
• Valokuvataiteen valtionpalkinto, 2010
• Higashiwa-palkinto Overseas Photographer Award -kategoriassa, 2014

Työssään hän tutkii historian, kulttuurin, identiteetin ja muistin teemoja luoden vuoropuhelun menneisyyden ja nykyisyyden välille. Hänen aihepiirinsä on vaihdellut tieteellisten töiden kuvituksista ja etnografisista valokuvista historiallisiin muotokuviin, joiden lähtökohtia löytyy usein arkistoista tai museoista.

The photographer Jorma Puranen has been working in Lapland for years, so when he found a dusty box of 19th century images of the Sami in an archive in Paris, he decided to take them back to their native land in what he calls an imaginary homecoming.

Valokuvaaja Jorma Puranen on työskennellyt Lapissa vuosikausia. Kun hän löysi arkistosta Pariisista pölyisen laatikon, jossa oli 1800-luvun valokuvia saamelaisista, hän päätti viedä ne takaisin isiensä maahan. Tätä hän kutsuu kuvitteelliseksi kotiinpaluuksi.
